I love movies. Movies can spark spiritual thought and conversations. Movie nights with your youth group are actually easy and fun. Parents will gladly drive their kids over because they know their kids will have a good time with great people. Kids will want to attend because they know nothing will be expected of them but to enjoy. You can add a desert and popcorn easily. My wife likes to make dinner too. It's a solid group building event.

Don't Just Sit There:
Movie Night is a great youth group building experience. Take advantage of snack breaks or dinner time to stimulate conversations and sharing. Use the ice-breaker book shown in the left column to keep the conversation going.
Pause the movie if there is a scene that has a spiritual parallel you might want to briefly discuss. Also, keep a notepad nearby if you see a scene you might mention as an illustration in a later lesson.

Videos That Teach 4: 75 More Movie Moments to Get Teenagers Talking By Doug Fields & Eddie James / Zondervan Youth Specialties In the same style of the ever popular Videos That Teach, Videos That Teach 2, and Videos That Teach 3, Fields and James deliver another round of video clips from recent movies designed to teach your students. For better or worse, movies are the storytellers for our postmodern students. With this follow up to the previous two best-sellers, you can use the "visual parables" of modern cinema to illustrate the point of your lesson or discussion. Teachable clips from 75 movie titles provide the frame work for Videos That Teach 4, an invaluable media resource for anyone who works with adolescents (or adults too, for that matter). Indexed by subject and Scripture references, each clip comes complete with summaries of the movie and the clip, start and stop times, Scripture references, and discussion-starter questions. Clips from popular movies make this highly usable book a resource that will appeal to youth workers, Bible study leaders, and Sunday school teachers of just about every denomination. |

Christian Video Licensing and Location:
I recommend hosting a movie night in your home. If you show a movie at church or other public building you must first ensure that you have obtained permission, even if you are only showing a 30-second scene. This is because pre-recorded videos and DVD's that you can buy or rent from shops are only intended for personal home use, not public viewing such as in your church building.
